GREENFREEZE CAMPAIGN OF GREENPEACE

YASUKO MATSUMOTO
ATMOSPHERE CAMPAIGNER
GREENPEACE JAPAN

October 3. 1995

From a single fridge built by Greenpeace using simple lighter
fuel, hydrocarbons, the greenfreeze campaign has revolutionised the
refrigeration industry.

Greenfreeze represents NIK(Not-In-Kind) technologies which
neither deplete the ozone layer nor contribute to global warming.
Greenfreeze is one of the solutions for getting rid of
environmentally damaging chemicals such as HCFCs and HFCs, which
were developed by the same chemical companies who have been
producing CFCs, as the best alternatives to CFCs. HCFCs deplete
ozone and HFCs are powerful greenhouse gases listed in the famous
IPCC(Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report. Industry
and a lot of goverments like USA and Japan have been strongly
opposed to stringent, controls on HCFCs and HFCs using the argument
that there are no alternatives to CFCs except HCFCs and HFCs
especially in the refigeration and airconditioning sectors and in
the rigid insulation sector.

Four years ago virtually every government, industry,
international policy specialists and a raft of so called ‘experts’
said that a conversion to greenfreeze was impossible. They have
been proved wrong.

Now, an increasing number of policy makers, governments and
companies actively support the greenfreeze approach. But this is
not yet sufficient to ensure the greenfreeze revolution is 100% won
around the globe. HCFC and HFC producers still dominate the issue
and usurp the Montreal Protocol process for their own interets. The
market for HCFCs and HFCs has been expanding most rapidly and
sharply in Asia because of the aggressive marketting of gigantic US
and Japanese chemical companies and user companies of those
chemicals.

However, the precedent set by greenfreeze offers the hope that
environmental groups will be able to unlock the scientific,
technical and human potential for environmental solutions which are
currently ignored and suppressed in order to allow profit from
pollution to continue.

“The beauty of greenfreeze is that anyone can have the
technology. It is not patented. It cannot be patented because all
we have done is find the right mixture of two existing common
gases. The technology is totally free and can be used by the whole
world, whether rich or poor, for a whole range of uses. The irony
is the chemical industry also searched for a substitute to CFCs but
only in one direction to find substances they could patent.” 〔In
the words for one of the Dortmund scientists in Germany〕

* The Dortmund is a municipal institute of City of Dortmund in
former west Germany which developed greennfreeze technology using
hydrocarbon mixture as the refrigerant for domestic fridges.
